What is ArtWorks?

ArtWorks is a gamified trail that allows you to buy and sell classic woks of art while learning about them, the artists who painted them and the events that inspired them. ArtWorks takes you where the likes of Picasso, Dali, Van Gogh and many others created some of their most influential works. You will be able to experience these works in Augmented Reality, while you learn little-known facts about the artist and the context in which they produced the paintings.

What period is ArtWorks covering?

ArtWorks is currently covering roughly 150 years, from the end of Impressionism to the beginning of Surrealism.

What is the purpose of the trail?

To get acquainted, in a fun and unusual format, with the painters and their environment. The trail will de-mystify much of the art that was produced at this exceptionally prolific period in Montmartre.

Where did you get your historical facts?

Hundreds of hours have gone into compiling weird and wonderful facts about some of the most influential painters of Montmartre. These anecdotes have been gathered by specialists in French history of art and cannot be readily found elsewhere.

How do you play ArtWorks?

One you have download the ArtWorks app and created your team, you will see several locations appear on your map. Walk to one of these locations and you'll receive instructions on your mobile device.

What is a checkpoint?

A checkpoint is a geo-located series of challenges, choices and works of art displayed in augmented reality.

What kind of challenges will be required?

The objective of the game is to put together the most valuable art collection in less than two hours. You will have a budget of 100.000 Francs, and opportunities to purchase and sell some of the most popular works of art of the last century. You will also have cultural questions about artists and their peers, allowing you to make more checkpoints appear on the map and therefore creating more opportunities for purchasing works of art.

What makes an art collection more valuable?

For our purposes, the more works of art you have in the same style, the more your collection will be valued. You'll have several categories to collect from: Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and Other Movements (minor but nevertheless influential currents that we wanted to feature, such as “École de Paris”, or “Nabis”).

How do I create or join a team?

When you first log in, you will get a link that takes you straight to your trail. You will be asked if you want to join or create a team. If you want to create your own team, you will be asked to create a 4 digit code. This will be useful if you want other people to join your team. If you want to join an existing team, select it in the drop-down menu and enter the 4 digit code of that team. You will also be sent your log-in via email so you can share it with the people you want to play with.

Do I need an internet connection?

Yes you do. It doesn't have to be amazing, but it is nevertheless necessary.

What happens if I loose my connection?

Your data will be safe and the game will continue as soon as you are back in range.

Can I order an ArtWorks trail now and do it later?

Absolutely. You just have to fill in the form that will let us know what day you want to do the trail, and check your inbox for your link.

How many people can compose a team?

We recommend 2-4 people in a team. Each team can hold up to 4 devices.

If there are several devices in one team, which answer will be taken into consideration?

The first device to connect within the team will be the active device. The other three devices in the team will be able to see the questions, messages, works of art, but will not be able to send input. The members within the team should be able to communicate and find agreement to move forward.
